Fuel Oil
Friday, July 8th, 2011How much oil furnace?
I am looking to buy a house that uses heating oil. That's about the level 1800ft built tri in 1973, 10 year old oven, in the South East Michigan. I usually keep the thermostat at 68 during the day and 55 night. I wondered how much it costs to heat a house like this on oil? So how much is a gallon of fuel to go in Michigan? It would therefore be more profitable to convert to propane?
Good luck with this, Mike. I am also in SE Michigan and I was in the construction business from your home was built. There * Lot * of variables, then my answer is going to sound more like a home inspection list, but here goes. One of the biggies: check caulking and caulking windows and doors. Look at the windows - single or double pane? Is there evidence of a seal between the panes is broken? Check insulation in walls and attic (remove outlet cover in an exterior wall to look in the wall). You'll probably want to add more insulation in the attic - but make sure that _all_ openings in the attic are sealed first, for example, where the son and the pipes come through the ceiling below. And so on. . . These are just some of the questions. Get the furnace checked by a technician (or qualified inspector). As for the cost of oil - it like the weather here. Give him 10 minutes and it will change. The best advice is here to fill your tank during the off season / when prices are low. At least with oil, you have the freedom to buy when it makes sense from a supplier that provides oil and good service at a low price - you can not necessarily be declared the purchase of gas and electricity. Enjoy your new home!
