Replacement Air
Friday, September 9th, 2011How Much Does it Cost for a Heat Pump/Air Conditioner Compressor Replacement?
I suspect my heat pump/air conditioner's compressor may be faulty on my 11 year old unit.
I know the prices may vary wildly (I live in northeast TN). But generally speaking, how much would it cost to have a technician replace a compressor? How much do the compressors usually cost themselves?
Also, is this something a do-it-yourselfer can do, or only a technician?
Thanks!
Compressors are not nearly as expensive as technicians want you to believe. You can look on the internet at places like coolspot and others to get prices. Make sure you get the same size as what you already have. If you have a way to capture the refrigerant to re-use, and access to a torch and know how to braze, you can replace it yourself. Just unsweat the old one and braze the new one in. Then you need a vacuum pump to pull all the air out of the lines, and then put the refrigerant back in.
