Chimney Cap
Wednesday, September 14th, 2011Real fire chimney and gas cap?
Hi there,
We have just had an external gas fire removed from our chimney breast so we could have a real fire in its place.
Anyway, we went to get the chimney cleaned and when the guy arrived he told us that the chimney had a gas cap on the chimney top and that would have to be removed if we wanted to burn solid fuel. Its a silvery looking thing, some sort of canister.
We got a quote to get it removed but its really expensive, some poeple have said that its not necessary to be removed.
What the chimney sweep told me did make sense about having it removed but I just want to be sure I am getting the right advice.
Thanks
The gas terminal has to be removed,or it will not clear any smoke from the chimney to give complete combustion for the fire. You may also have a stainless steel flue liner in the chimney which was installed for the gas fire. This would also have to be removed. if the gas terminal is removed from the chimney, and you have a Flue liner, Then you can pull the liner out at the fire place end without having to go on he roof. The gas terminal is held on by a couple of screws. UU
