Can I use my escape from the portable generator in a bucket of water to calm down?

I have a small generator, noisy laptop that I would be quieter. Can I use a hose into a bucket of water to calm down or will that damage the engine?

Much of noise from small engines through the engine housing. Reduce exhaust noise will help, but this is not the only source. I am not sure how you plan to do in a practical way.
