Electric or gas to heat water for showers, which is cheaper?
I currently heat my water tank for our power shower / bath with gas. I have three daughters and they all morning shower, gas is over three hours to ensure that there enough hot water for each. However, our tank has an electrical switch connected to the heater in the tank which gives us instant hot water (such as the use and electric shower). My question is, would it be cheaper to have the water heated by electricity for 30 minutes while the girls have showers or heat the entire tank for three hours with the gas. I know that the gas is considered less expensive than electricity, but even in this case? And environmental issues? Does anyone know what is cost of gas for heating three hours and electricity for a few minutes Thrity? Please give a reason for your answer! Thank you I live in north London
Sorry to say you seem a bit misinformed?? If as you say, you have a heater in your hot water tank, it can not be "Snapshot" there is no such thing. It heats the water in a way similar to the coil in the cylinder. Boiler gas you use will probably not actually heating the water for three hours, assuming you have a stat of bottles and other controls, Conversely, the heat of immersion is never enough water for heat 3 showers in half an hour! I assume your tank is 40 gallons or not?? The heater will cost about 36p per hour when the heating. If you want a speedy recovery, I suggest you put both gas and electric for the duration the period of the shower, it will leave you well enough hw cylinder filled with hot water when you turn.
