How do I focus on the subject and the background blur using a digital camera?

It seems no stupid question but I do not know much about cameras. I love looking at the big picture and have a baby on the way so I at least learn to manipulate my digital camera Optio around at least for me this way. I always notice the pictures that the professional face and especially the eyes are very clear and crisp while the background is blurred in some way. How do I get there?

It helps to have some understanding on how the depth of field work. DoF is controlled by the aperture, the focal length of the lens and the distance from the camera to the subject and object background. The short answer is that you might have some difficulties have less DoF on a P & S cameras. They have sensors for small and large lenses angle that automatically have much depth of field. The macro, you'll see some background blur, but for macro close-up work. You may be able to use the macro for some close-ups, especially for small hands and feet. If your camera has a manual setting, use it and choose the width of an opening as you can (small numbers) or use the portrait mode, which should do the same thing. Zoom in all the telephoto end, and baby too far from the background as you can. The farther from the BG, the less attention it will be. Be sure to emphasize the baby's eyes. You will hear the background blur called "bokeh". Bokeh is in fact the characteristics of gray areas. Lenses are known to have good bokeh or bad, but it is a somewhat subjective opinion.
